Isabella Gamez, a figure skater, hopes to represent the Philippines!
Isabella Gamez, a 23-year-old Filipino-American, was born and raised in the United States; her three other siblings were born in the Philippines, leaving her as the only one born in America.
"My parents made it really important that we went home to the Philippines for about a month growing up to understand our roots, where we come from, and so we have a strong background," Gamez said in an interview with GMA News Online.
Gamez stated that her father's side is full of doctor titles, whereas her mother's side, the figure skater, went from former Olympian and senator Freddie Webb. She is the basketball legend's granddaughter.
Gamez is thankful for a strong support system in her skating journey, particularly her family. Especially now that she has the opportunity to make an impact in Philippine sports.
Gamez previously competed for Spain and the United States, and she has now decided to represent the Philippines with her Russian partner, Alexander Korovin.
During their trip to the Philippines in April 2022, the two made certain that they were well-versed in the country they would be representing.
"I think yes, it's the right choice," Korovin said, "because people in the Philippines are friendly and very kind."
Two weeks from now, Gamez and Korovin will compete in Warsaw, Poland, before returning to Manila in December for the skating national championships and a Christmas gala.
